How humble pie might be the perfect meal

When’s the last time you were truly humbled? By nature, by beauty, by an act of kindness? Perhaps it’s the other way. By your own bad behavior, arrogance or ignorance?

Sometimes a slice of humble pie can be the perfect catalyst for change. Other times humility can look a guy parked a few vehicles down in a Walmart parking lot, sitting upright all night in a truck that though drove, wasn’t running to provide heat. It was below freezing degrees last night and there he sat, smoking cigarettes and doing his best to seem like things weren’t as bad as they seemed.

I peeked out of the warm van a few times to see if he was still there. He was. For many hours, just sitting there in a cold truck on an even colder night.

I debated making him a cup of coffee. Felt like the most humane thing I could do. I decided I would but as I went to deliver it to him he was gone.

It was a good reminder life is now. Don’t wait to be kind to others and take a moment to count your blessings because somewhere in Colorado there’s a man living a hard life, alone in a truck and I don’t mean in a hipster #vanlife kind of way.

Humility is such a wonderful teacher.
